Should You Triple Wash Your Hair? What a Trichologist Says
Triple washing, as the name suggests, involves washing your hair three times in a single session. While this may seem excessive, it could be an effective hair care strategy for certain hair types.
However, many factors determine if this method is suitable for you. Aside from considering how your hair type or texture might be impacted by triple washing, it’s also important to remember that everyone’s scalp microbiome is different. Though it’s important to prioritize deep cleansing, offering a healthy environment for your scalp to thrive is not a one-size-fits-all deal.
As a double-board-certified trichologist, I know the value of finding a healthy hair care regime that works for you. For some, this might include triple washing. But what are the pros and cons of engaging in this routine? Let's explore the potential benefits and drawbacks of triple-washing your hair along with best practices.
The Pros of Triple Washing Your Hair
Triple washing might not be for all hair types and scalps, but if you typically wash your hair only once a week, triple washing on your designated wash day may offer some advantages. If you have healthy hair and are just looking to give it a good wash, triple washing can be great on occasion.
The triple-wash process allows for thorough and deep cleansing of the scalp and hair, removing any accumulated dirt, oil, and product buildup. Triple washing can also help promote a healthier scalp by addressing issues like excess sebum, dandruff, or product residue.
By ensuring a clean and balanced scalp, triple washing can facilitate better absorption of scalp treatments and hair care products. When paired with hydrating shampoos and conditioners, triple washing can help hydrate and nourish the hair strands, leaving them softer and more manageable.
The Downside of Triple Washing Your Hair
Triple washing may not be best for those with certain hair textures or scalp conditions. Individuals with scalp issues like rosacea, psoriasis, or eczema should avoid washing their hair three times in a row. These conditions require specialized shampoos that are not meant for daily or excessive use.
Similarly, individuals with fine, processed hair, such as bleached or relaxed hair, should exercise caution when considering triple washing. The repeated washing can strip the hair fibers and damage the already compromised cuticle, leading to breakage and further hair damage. It is essential to consider your hair type, scalp issues, and overall hair health before incorporating this practice into your routine.
Best Practices for Triple Washing Your Hair
When triple washing, I recommend following a specific routine to ensure the best results. This three-step process can provide a deep cleanse and help maintain the health of your scalp and hair if done correctly.
Start with a deep cleansing shampoo to cleanse the scalp. (Learn more about surfactants, the cleaning agents in shampoo that help rinse away impurities like dirt and oils.)
Follow with a hydrating shampoo to nourish the hair strands.
Complete the process with a scalp-specific shampoo to promote scalp health and balance the microbiome.
Be sure you’re massaging each round of shampoo well into the scalp and rinse thoroughly. This ensures the product does its job without leaving any residue.
Trichologist Recommended Products for Triple Washing
As a trichologist, I recommend the Tony Maleedy Juniper Shampoo sold exclusively at my center. This gentle shampoo significantly supports scalp health, can help many scalp problems, and may optimize the scalp’s ability to produce hair. It is made with therapeutic, plant-based oils, including juniper oil from the juniper tree, mint oil, thyme oil, rosemary oil, and eucalyptus oil. It also has an accompanying conditioner.
I suggest using a hydrating conditioning cream post-shampooing to help restore moisture to the hair shaft, leaving your hair feeling soft and hydrated. At my trichology center, I offer a coconut hair cream that is perfect for hydrating the hair shaft. Coconut oil is a triglyceride of lauric acid (principal fatty acid), has a high affinity for hair proteins, and can penetrate inside the hair shaft because of its low molecular weight and straight linear chain.
You can also try TricoPro’s scalp treatment line. TricoPro offers scalp treatments to help stimulate the scalp and nourish the scalp and hair. Each cream has been made with natural ingredients to support your hair and scalp health. Some ingredients include juniper oil, rosemary oil, vitamin E, menthol, coconut oil, and olive oil.
If you’re looking to add more vitality to your hair, I’d suggest the Tricoextra: EP Supplement line I carry. These supplements are created by a trichologist and packed with all the vitamins you will need to keep your hair looking its very best. This product is also rated as the Best Hair Supplement 2024 in the UK.
